A Beacon of Hope Along the Kurinwás River
When Colegio Amparo opened its doors in February 2022, it marked the beginning of a new chapter for families in eight river communities of Nicaragua’s Wawashan Reserve. What began as a dream has become a thriving, faith-based learning community—offering free, quality education where none existed before.
As the only school within a 4-hour boat ride to provide both primary and secondary education, Colegio Amparo now serves more than 250 students, including 32 adult learners who attend Saturday classes. Two dedicated “school bus boats” travel the Kurinwás River daily, giving students from distant villages the opportunity to study, dream, and build a better future.
In partnership with Nicaragua’s Ministry of Education, Amparo is transforming the story of education in this region. Where once over 30% of children left school before completing Grade 6, today hundreds are discovering new possibilities through learning. Each year the school grows with its students—adding a new grade level—and in 2026, we will celebrate our first graduating class of secondary students.

At Amparo, we believe that education is about more than lessons—it’s about nurturing both hearts and minds in an atmosphere shaped by God’s love. We recognize that a child’s ability to learn is deeply influenced by their environment, so we intentionally create classrooms filled with warmth, encouragement, and grace.
Rooted in our Christian faith, we seek to reflect Christ’s compassion in every interaction. Our teachers cultivate spaces where students feel seen, heard, and valued—places where curiosity is welcomed, creativity flourishes, and faith grows alongside knowledge.
By fostering a community of respect, joy, and hope, we’re helping to shape confident, compassionate young people who not only excel in their studies but also live out their faith as they serve their communities and the world.
